A flat tape sample can meet a mass-per-length target while still raising questions about its width or thickness. Buyers therefore need three separate descriptions: the dimensional requirement, the measurement method and the locations represented by the samples. Recording only an average width leaves the supplier unable to tell whether the concern is one tape position, one production interval or the whole trial.
This guide explains how to prepare a dimensional sampling request for woven-packaging tape. The recommendations below are general measurement planning advice. They do not establish a tolerance, production capability or acceptance result for a particular extrusion line.
Begin by identifying what will actually be measured. A film strip taken before drawing is not the same specimen as finished tape collected after drawing and winding. Label the process stage, material lot and winding package. If the requirement concerns tape delivered to a circular loom, make that downstream use explicit in the specification.
State whether the specimen is measured relaxed, under an agreed small tension or by another defined method. Do not stretch a curled specimen by hand until it appears straight and then treat the result as a reproducible dimension. Agree how the tape is supported, how curl is handled and how long the sample rests before measurement. Record any conditioning requirement supplied by the buyer or testing laboratory.
Keep the requested units clear. Width and thickness may be reported in different units, so every column needs its own unit label. Put nominal values and acceptance limits in separate fields. An observed result should never silently become the next order's approved tolerance.
Sampling has two directions. Across the line, the buyer may want to compare identified tape positions. Through time, the buyer may want to compare samples collected at specified trial stages. Both directions require a reference. Describe which side is called left, and whether numbering is viewed in the material travel direction or from the operator's position.
General workshop practice: sketch the tape positions on a collection sheet and give every specimen a position code and a collection time. Attach the code to the sample envelope rather than writing over the area that will be measured. This keeps the specimen traceable without altering its surface.
Define the sampling frequency and number of specimens before comparing machines or materials. Samples taken only after an operator has adjusted the line may describe a selected stable interval rather than the entire agreed trial. Keep startup, adjustment and stable-production samples identified separately, with the reason for each category recorded.
The width method needs to resolve both edges without distorting the tape. An optical method and a contact method may not respond identically to curl, uneven edges or translucency. Ask the person responsible for measurement to select the appropriate instrument and document the edge definition. Keep the instrument identification and its calibration status with the results.
Thickness measurement requires particular attention to contact geometry and measuring force. Compressing or folding a thin specimen can change the reading. Record whether the method measures one tape layer or a defined stack, along with the instrument conditions. Dividing a stack reading by the layer count should not automatically be treated as equivalent to a validated single-layer method.
Set rules for damaged edges, folds and contaminated areas. If a reading is excluded, retain its location and the exclusion reason. A replacement reading should not erase the original observation. Where instrument resolution or specimen shape makes a result uncertain, report the limitation instead of adding unsupported decimal places.
A useful record gives each specimen its width result, thickness result, location and trial condition. Summaries can then describe the agreed sample set. Retain individual readings even when the purchasing document asks for an average, because the same average can conceal different patterns across positions or collection times.
Keep linear density in a separate column if it is measured. Denier or tex describes mass per length; neither directly proves a particular width or thickness. Material composition and specimen geometry affect the relationship. A calculated estimate should be identified as an estimate, with its assumptions, rather than entered as a measured dimension.
General review practice: compare a position-by-time table before changing the process. A difference isolated to one specimen calls for a different investigation from a recurring difference at the same position. The map helps select a follow-up check; it does not by itself prove the machine setting responsible.
Zhejiang Kangjia Machinery Co., Ltd. lists flat yarn extrusion and winding equipment within its woven-packaging machinery range. Its MY-FS5.5 Plastic Flat Tape Extrusion Line page asks buyers to define tape width, thickness, polymer and downstream loom requirements. Those inputs provide a practical starting point for discussing the trial specimen and sampling locations.
Send a compact package containing the intended fabric, finished-tape dimensions, material information, sample map and proposed measurement method. Include winding requirements and the target output as separate project inputs. Ask the supplier to confirm which conditions can be demonstrated on the quoted configuration and which questions need further technical review.
The quotation should distinguish the requested dimensional limits from the method used to verify them. Agree who measures, how disputed readings are reviewed and which retained specimens represent the trial. A clear record supports a purchasing decision without implying that one catalog model guarantees every tape specification.
A photograph can communicate approximate shape and location. Perspective, edge definition and scale resolution may prevent it from supporting a tight dimensional decision. Use the agreed measurement method for acceptance and retain photographs as supplementary identification evidence.
Only if that preparation is part of the agreed suitable method. An improvised load can change the specimen condition. Specify support, tension or contact conditions with the responsible technician, and apply the same documented preparation to comparable specimens.
No. An average describes the selected readings together. Check the individual results and their position codes against the agreed criteria. Preserve unusual observations so that repeat measurements or further sampling can address the actual location of the concern.
